Zurich Heart: The Heart of Tomorrow

Heart failure is an increasing problem in western population. The project aims at a fully implantable artificial heart: the "Zurich Heart“.

A heart transplantation or the implantation of an artificial heart is the only treatment option for severe heart failure.

Innovative components for transcutaneous energy supply, improved surface materials to avoid thromboembolic complications, highly efficient and adaptive regulation and sensor technology as well as hyperelastic hybrid membranes and soft materials will be the essence of the "Zurich Heart“.

Nearly 20 research groups of ETH Zurich, the University of Zurich, the associated hospitals in Zurich as well as the German Heart Center Berlin and Empa are committed to the ambitious vision.
